Although he at first appears to be a fill-in-the-blank-with-your-crush character, Tamahome quietly reveals himself to be responsible and sweet in a totally non-generic way.  We can forgive his over-the-top heroism in the face of his real and honest feelings.  And we're forced to admit that he would make a really good friend.  And that we respect him.  In fact, the only bad thing that can be said about him is that there's nothing really wrong with him.
